United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women
About the Committee:
The United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women, or UN Women, was founded in 2010 as a conglomerate of 4 previous committees contributing to the same cause. The main purposes of this committee are to establish international standards concerning the advancement of women's roles in daily life as well as governmental and economic settings. Delegates will debate the two issues chosen with regards for women's rights and gender equality as a whole, and hopefully create viable resolutions that will work for the international community.
Topic 1: Legalization of Abortion
Abortion is not only an issue on a women's rights scale; it concerns the fundamentals of human rights as well. There is ample debate on the topic nationally in many of our member states, however international standards have failed to be set with regard to anything other than health concerns. Many nations may have oppressive abortion laws or very obscure legislature on the matter, which need to be re-evaluated by the committee. Delegates should meet this issue with various definitions, considerations, and ample debate in order to reach a viable resolution.
Topic 2: Human Trafficking
Human Trafficking is the "acquisition of people by improper means such as force, fraud, or deception, with the aim of exploiting them." Plaguing the world for quite some time, it has grown to become the second largest criminal industry in the world with an estimated 27 million victims with only 40 thousand recognized and rescued. The industry has often been classified into either sex trafficking and labor trafficking. Sex trafficking includes pornography, stripping, prostitution, mail-order spouses, live shows, and sex tourism. Labor trafficking correlates to victims being forced to work against their will under violence threats to either them or their family members. Women and young females make up more than 50% of sex trafficking victims, and have an equally high number in labor trafficking crimes as well. Although the UN has many documents and conventions progressing towards a "human trafficking-free" world, the issue is still persistently becoming worse.

Chair: Emma MayerEmma Mayer is currently a senior in the IB program at Henrico High School. She will be your chair this weekend and has been doing Model UN since 8th grade, has attended 11 conferences, and is the treasurer of the club at Henrico. Last year, she chaired the International Atomic Energy Agency at RICHMUNd I and had such a great time that she decided to return this year as well, although this committee is a drastic change of pace. In her very meager amount of free time, she loves to ride horses, read lots and lots of books, and take down the patriarchy. Something Emma really enjoys is travelling, and she have been to many of the nations that you guys are representing and have been able to learn truly invaluable information about them. Emma is very very passionate about the issues that have been chosen for debate, as well as what this committee stands for, and she hopes you are too at the end of the journey!

Vice Chair: Vaishnavi KarimpuzhaVaishnavi Karimpuzha is a sophomore at Henrico High for IB this year and already looking forward to summer vacation. She is your vice chair for UNEGEEW this year for RichMUNd II. She has been a part of Model UN since 7th grade and has won either verbal accommodation, honorable mention, or outstanding delegation at each conference she's attended and hopes to win best delegate sometime soon. Between procrastinating on IB homework, working hard at karate, taking classical Indian dance lessons, and playing viola (not all that well) for Richmond Symphony, she tries to make the most out of her spare time. She loves anything to do with the outdoors especially if it concerns rock climbing, running, hiking, and swimming. She likes to think herself as a beach person and her favorite places to spend time during the summer include riding the ponies at Assateauge Beach in Maryland or enjoying the waves at Myrtle Beach. She truly loves Model UN and being a bit of a feminist herself, is super excited to help vice-chair UNEGEEW! She hopes that all delegates will enjoy the controversial debate and new challenges but learn to see the fun in MUN as well!
