United Nations Human Rights Council
About The Committee
The Human Rights Council was created in 2006, replacing the Commission on Human Rights, in order to deal with thematic human rights issues and violations. This council makes recommendations on them, which may then be executed by the Security Council. As a committee, delegates will work together to create international standards for the two topics. Subsequently, delegates will attempt to create a resolution that may be passed. Although this is a serious committee, it will be fun to debate about rights that we are granted. Everyone needs their universal human rights, and the standards need to be improved.
Topic 1: Labor Rights in Emerging Nations
The economy has been changing, and the typical western nations do not control the market anymore. Emerging nations such as Argentina and Bangladesh are gaining more bargaining more as they begin to use their natural resources. In addition, China and India have high expansion rates due to their human capital and technological catch up. Workers may not be receiving the right working conditions in these emerging nations. The labor rights should be improved and enforced. Delegates will cooperatively investigate and solve the issue.
Topic 2: Human Trafficking
The issue of human trafficking is rampant in many countries, and affects every single country. The definition of human trafficking encompasses not only those who are moved from their homes, but also victims who are forced into labor or sexual slavery in the same location they were previously in. The definition of this problem is important, along with finding viable solutions. Delegates will work collaboratively for the empowerment of human trafficking victims around the world, because victims are often moved across borders by their traffickers to countries with more lenient laws.
