Salem Witch Trials 1692
About the Committee
This committee will re-create the scenario surrounding the Salem Witch Trials of 1692 which were the largest Witch Trials in American History and resulted in the imprisonment and torture of over 150 accused witches and 20 executions. As a committee, we will discuss the definition of witchcraft and what constitutes as evidence for accusation. Afterwards, we will go hold trials for the accused witches. Those who were actually trialed do not have to be the only ones who go on trial during committee! Good luck with your research and we are looking forward to meeting you all!
Topic 1:
The first topic involves defining witchcraft and what constitutes as evidence for accusation. We will debate controversial topics such as who can accuse witches, what defines witchcraft and the Devil’s influence, and whether spectral evidence (evidence based on dreams and visions) should be admitted in court trials.
Topic 2:
The second topic is about the history of Salem and the witch trials. We will discuss the history of the town and what actually caused the possession of the girls. As a committee, we will then go through actual trials and decide who is guilty of witchcraft and who is not.

Chair: Joseph ZampettiJoseph Zampetti is a current Junior at Henrico High School. Unlike the rest of the members of the club, Joseph is a member of the Center for the Arts Program. This makes him unique because he is the only non IB student in the club. Even though Joseph has been born and raised in Richmond, Virginia his whole life, he is always able to contribute his worldly ideas to the club. One thing which contributed to this is the fact that he traveled to Italy for a CFA trip and was able to gain new perspectives on not only the world, but also the UN. When it comes to Model UN, he prefers historic committees. Outside of Model UN, Joseph is an amazing artist, creating paintings that could make your jaw drop.
